New Moon Rituals You Can Customize to Your Needs

When New Moon arrives, I’m always excited to incorporate its energy into my self-healing practices.  I know everyone gives the Full Moon most of the attention, but as an energy healing coach with a motto of “go inward,” I love the New Moon just as much. It’s a perfect time to take advantage of the Moon’s energy and align with it to maximize your self-healing power.

The Moon is the mother, she represents the feminine and has a nurturing and calming energy.  She heals and soothes. She brings up emotions and almost forces them into our awareness while also giving us the tools to nurture ourselves with a self-healing process that is ever evolving. This is why engaging in New Moon self-healing practices is so important for energy hygiene.

Each of us naturally cycles this way with the Moon, even if we don’t notice it.  We are often more reflective and tend to begin new habits, projects or even new relationships during the New Moon.  As the Moon grows, we grow.  It’s part of how nature is designed and by using this energy to our advantage we can amplify our self-healing practices.

You are your own healer and you already intuitively know exactly what you need to do to heal - so your New Moon self-healing practices should reflect where you are and what you need to do to heal. This should only serve as a guide to get you inspired and ready to create your own self-healing practices using the energy from the New Moon.

But first, I’m sure you are wondering...

Why New Moon Rituals?

Perhaps the most simple answer to this question is that the energy of the New Moon is one of reflection and the beginnings of growth. And these two things are essential to the self-healing process.

The energy of the Moon is a nurturing energy and the New Moon is very representative of growth. The New Moon takes place when the moon has completed it’s cycle and is now New again and because of this working with the New Moon energy gives us a better chance of nurturing the growth we desire.

In my opinion, the first part of that growth is knowing what growth you are looking to foster.  Since the New Moon has a contractive energy that tends to make us want to go inward, it’s the perfect time for reflection which naturally begins the growth process.

After reflecting, you’ll have awareness of things that aren’t serving you.  This could be actions, relationships, ideas, businesses - anything that isn’t meeting your needs.  The New Moon energy is about using that awareness to set new intentions that do serve you.

And that’s why the New Moon energy is a great time to begin, or recommit, to your self-healing practices.

What to do on a New Moon

Traditionally, the New Moon Rituals were seen as a perfect time to practice the cleansing practices known as the Shatkarmas. For this reason, I do recommend some New Moon Rituals that are in alignment with this notion.  This is not a Shatkarma practice though because some are present, others are not.

Instead, consider these recommendations a beacon toward the right direction and not actually your path.  Your exact path will present itself to you.  It may already have.

🌟Breathing exercises are an excellent New Moon Ritual

The breath is the vehicle of emotions and the Moon represents our emotions and our mind. This is why I recommend starting with the breath. Breathing techniques that channel mostly calming and cooling energy like the Moon tend to work best for New Moon self-healing practices. While more energizing and heating breathing techniques are better left for different parts of the self healing process. Pick a breathing exercise you feel is right for you at the time and allow yourself to fully immerse in it.  Go for as long as you can but shoot for 11 minutes.  This will give your mind and body time to connect via your breath.

🌟For your New Moon Ritual - Focus on something external

Using an external focal point allows you to relax your mind enough to allow the connection between your mind and your body to fully work together.  This is what will allow your mind, body and energy to get on the same page before you move on to the next step.

To do this, pick a focal point, it can be anything but I love using the crystal or stone that feels right that day.  You could also choose a point on the floor or wall.. Once you’ve chosen the spot, focus your attention to your right eye.  Actively attempt to relax it for several seconds.  Now move your attention to your left eye and do the same.  After you’ve relaxed both eyes, begin to focus on the focal point you chose.  Allow your thoughts to float by, moving and changing, like clouds as you focus on the external thing for several minutes or until your eyes begin to water.

🌟Focus on something internal

This, like the recommendation before it, is a Shatkarma style practice.  Traditionally focusing on something internal was about focusing on one stable object.  For these New Moon self-healing practices, that internal thing you will be focusing on is ONE thing that isn’t serving you.  Yes, just one.  Trust that what comes up first is the thing you should be focusing on, don’t hem and haw about it.  Just trust that what comes up is it.

To do this, set your intention.  Tell yourself, out loud or internally, that you intend to shine light on the thing that is serving you the least.  Then close your eyes and allow your mind to tell you exactly what you should focus on.  This is where you trust whatever comes up first is right for now.  Since you’ll be doing your self-healing practices with each New Moon, you can also trust that you’ll be able to work on something else soon

🌟The perfect journal Prompt for every New Moon Ritual

After you’ve shed some light onto the one thing that isn’t serving you the most - it’s time to dig in and find out why it isn’t serving you.  Journal about what isn’t serving your life.

You could do this while doing step two internally but I find creating more energy by writing it down amplifies it - so even jotting down a few notes is good. I think that's why journaling is a self-healing practice most of us know and (eventually) love.

🌟Meditate on the change you want to create

Now that you know what isn’t serving you, it’s time to focus on what changes you need to make that will create something that is serving you.

To do this, set a timer for the number of minutes that feels right with the intention of going past it and close your eyes.  Focus your attention on solving the problem of replacing what wasn’t serving you with something that does.  Allow your brain to focus on the solution and run through different ways you can create the change until the timer goes off.  Stop the timer and close your eyes again.  This time focus your attention on the option that feels most right.  Go with the option that comes up first.  No second guessing, only trusting your intuition.

🌟Set your intentions

Take the option that felt most right and turn it into an “I am” statement.  Now recite that statement like a chant on every exhale.  Get faster with each exhale until it almost sounds like one word.  Chant that way until you feel it is done.

🌟Light the fire under your change

The New Moon is dark because the Moon’s light has not yet fully emerged.  For this reason, lighting a candle will cast light onto what wasn’t serving you and shed light on the path to the change you want.  Additionally, the flame represents fire, which is an ancient tool of transformation and will help you to facilitate change.

To do this, light a candle and read your journal entry as it burns.  Then clearly state your intentions, in the form of the “I am” statement, until you feel it is done.

🌟Bring it to the external

Bring only your intentions of what serves you with you by creating something with your “I am” statement in mind.  It could be something as literal as writing it down or something as elaborate as painting while chanting it.  No matter what it is, create something PHYSICAL with your “I am” statement in mind. Add what you created to your altar (or a space you visit daily while alone) and try to look at it every time you pass it.

More New Moon Rituals for Self Healing

To further integrate the New Moon into your self-healing process, you can begin to do this process every New Moon to help you maintain a regular reflection and intention setting practice.  If you’re looking to maximize the use of the moon in your self-healing process, it may be wise to begin curating your own self-healing practice for the Full Moon energy as well.

You can also use self-healing practices that channel moon energy. These are things like holding moon based asanas (like half-moon or cow) and doing restorative yoga using mostly supine or sitting positions. It can also include breathing (like Sitali,Chandra Anga, or Bhramari) and working with stones like Moonstone and Rose Quartz.  Another great way to infuse the Moon into your self-healing process is by drinking nourishing herbal infusions, which works especially well if both Venus and Mars are close by.

To build your own New Moon self-healing practices, I would recommend that you try out a variety of practices that channel moon energy.  How you move and what works for you is largely based on the energy you are made of and it’s likely that you’ll have natural inclinations for how you should move and what practices you should focus on making part of your self-healing process.

New Moon Rituals for Everyone

Using these two special times in the Moon’s cycle to create a self-healing practice that works for you is one of the most powerful ways to connect to the Universal oneness that connects us all.  Since the Moon is one of the luminaries and therefore one of the most prominent energies in our lives, it’s your birthright to use it to enhance your experience here on this planet.

Don’t worry about following these recommendations (or any recommendations) down to the letter.  Take them with a grain of salt and let your intuition guide you.

Because you are your own healer and your self-healing process is perfect, just as it is.  It will change and each time it does, it will be just as perfect.
